The testing machine was made in the workshop of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to test the physical properties of dental materials, particularly amalgam fillings, gold alloys and gypsum products. It is operated by means of a hydraulic ram and is fitted with two pressure gauges to read high and low rates of loading.
